Abstract

The economy of North Sumatra based on the amount of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) based on current prices in the first quarter of 2020 reached Rp 207.27 trillion and at the base of constant prices in 2010 reached Rp 136.72 trillion.
  • The economy of North Sumatra in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the first quarter of 2019 grew 4.65 percent (y-on-y) compared to the achievements in the first quarter of 2019 of 5.31 percent. In terms of production, the highest growth was achieved by the Information and Communication business sector by 9.97 percent. In terms of expenditure, the highest growth was in the PMTB Component which grew by 7.98 percent.
  • The economy of North Sumatra in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the previous quarter fell to - 0.94 percent (q-to-q). From the production side, the decline was caused by a contraction that occurred in most business sectors. While from the expenditure side, the decline was caused by contraction in all components except PK-LNPRT Components.
  • The spatial economic structure in North Sumatra Island in the first quarter of 2020 was dominated by several provinces including North Sumatra Province giving the largest contribution to GRDP on Sumatra Island by 23.97 percent, followed by Riau Province by 22.08 percent, South Sumatra Province by 13 , 45 percent, and Lampung Province by 10.46 percent. While the lowest contribution was made by Bengkulu Province and Bangka Belitung Islands Province.
